Three new signs that unlock the history and community use of one of Liverpool’s oldest parks have been installed as part of Writing on the Wall’s Creative Heritage project in partnership with Liverpool City Council. During 2026, residents of Canning Ward worked with Writing on the Wall to research history, document memories and share community stories of Falkner Square in Liverpool 8, to shape new information signage for the park.

The three panels feature a timeline stretching from Liverpool’s early history as a port in the 1600s alongside featured stories uncovered by the community members through archival research and the recording of living memories. One of the three panels is dedicated to the establishment of the Black Merchant Seamen’s Memorial.

The signs have been installed in early November 2026, in time to honour the Remembrance celebrations at the Black Merchant Seafarer’s Memorial, and to coincide with the Martinmas celebrations that nearby Deutsche Kirche Liverpool hold in the park on the 11th November. Members of both of these communities took part in the creation of the signs, and you can read more about the project, and hear more in-depth stories from the communities who use the park in the audio recordings available on the Unlock Falkner Square project page.
