Unlock Falkner Square: a free six-week creative heritage programme

Do you love history?
Are you curious about archives and untold stories?
Do you have memories of Falkner Square — or want to uncover what came before it?

Writing on the Wall is inviting local people to take part in a free six-week creative heritage programme, beginning Monday 16 February, exploring the hidden histories and lived experiences of Faulkner Square.

Sessions will take place on Monday evenings at the German Church, Bedford St S, Liverpool L7 7BX, and will include discussion, guest speakers and practical guidance on working with archives and historical sources.

Together, we’ll explore:

  • What existed before the park — and why it was created
  • Edward Falkner and the square’s links to the transatlantic slave trade
  • The Black Seafarers’ Memorial and its significance today
  • Iconic films shot in and around the square
  • How Falkner Square has changed over time — and how it’s used now

Using research, memories and community stories, participants will help shape new public information signage for the square — bringing history, lived experience and collective memory back into the space.

📅 Start date: Monday 16 February
📍 Location: The German Church, Bedford Street, Liverpool, L7 7BX
