One of the most moving and powerful highlights of WOWFEST25 was From Spellow to Southport…with Love, a special family-friendly celebration of resilience, creativity, and community healing. Held in the stunning Isla Gladstone Conservatory, this unforgettable event brought together four of the UK’s most celebrated voices – Michael Rosen, Jackie Kay, Jordan Stephens, and Beth Suzanna – for a day that was as heartwarming as it was thought-provoking.
The day opened with dynamic and interactive storytelling from Jordan Stephens and Beth Suzanna, who captivated young audiences with tales that connected deeply with the natural world and themes of empathy, curiosity, and imagination.
This event was born in response to tragedy, the devastating murders of young girls in Southport and the racist riots that damaged Spellow Library. Yet, it was shaped by hope. In partnership with Culture Liverpool and Spellow Library, Writing on the Wall launched What’s Your Walton Story?, a series of creative writing sessions where local voices came together to tell their stories of life in Walton. The resulting anthology, Walton Rising, was celebrated and launched on the day, giving community members a platform to be heard and honoured.
Throughout the day, visitors of all ages engaged in poetry, creative activities, and message-writing, with postcards of love and solidarity flowing like a river through the conservatory space.
A poignant and deeply emotional moment came with the presence of Lauren and Ben King, parents of Bebe King, who lost her life in the Southport attack of July 2024. They introduced Bebe’s Hive, a new community interest company founded in their daughter’s memory, dedicated to supporting grieving children through creativity and connection. Their strength and words, ‘Born from loss. Rooted in love. Guided by Bebe,’ resonated powerfully with everyone present.
Also joining the event was Bebe’s uncle, poet and educator Oliver James Lomax, whose poem Be, written for Bebe and her family, was shared with moving clarity. Lomax’s belief in the healing power of the arts and cultural equity underscored the entire day’s message.
We were treated to performances both heartfelt and hilarious by stars Michael Rosen and Jackie Kay as they treated us to readings from their latest children’s books and shared stories of their own losses throughout their lives.
From Spellow to Southport…with Love reminded us that even in the shadow of loss, creativity can be a source of healing and unity. As a WoWFEST25 highlight, it stood as a testament to the enduring power of poetry, community, and collective hope.
