Making a welcome return to WoWFEST, Dr John Cooper Clarke one of the most iconic poets of our time, whose seminal works, including Evidently Chickentown and (I Married a) Monster from Outer Space are as relevant and vibrant today as when they were first written. If he hadn’t achieved enough already, the status of the ‘Godfather of Punk Poetry,’ is now writ large as Dr John Cooper Clarke became the first-ever poet to headline an arena here in the UK, with a sell-out performance at The Co-op arena in Manchester. You will not want miss this unique evening of conversation and performance that promises to be full of his trademark sardonic wit, biting satirical verse and hilarious ponderings on modern life. His work bridges literature, music and performance, the self-confessed nosy parker is hot off the back of his arena tour and the paperback release of his best-selling poetry collection, WHAT.
John Cooper Clarke (born 1949, Salford) is an English performance poet known for his rapid-fire delivery, sharp wit, and punk-inspired style. Rising to fame in the 1970s, he became a key figure in the punk movement, performing alongside bands like the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and Joy Division. His biting social commentary and dark humour are evident in works such as Evidently Chickentown and (I Married a) Monster from Outer Space. His recording of Evidently Chickentown was featured heavily in The Sopranos episode ‘Stage 5’. Clarke’s influence extends beyond poetry, inspiring musicians like the Arctic Monkeys and comedians such as Stewart Lee. Over the years, he has released albums, appeared in films and TV shows, and published acclaimed poetry collections. In 2013, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Salford, and in 2022, he received the Freedom of Salford in recognition of his contributions to the arts. Still performing to packed audiences, Clarke remains a beloved and influential figure in British poetry and pop culture.
