Paul Birtill is one of Liverpool’s most distinctive poetic voices — sharp, funny, compassionate and unflinchingly honest. His work captures the beauty, absurdity and hardship of everyday life with warmth, wit and emotional precision, moving effortlessly between humour and heartbreak. A long-standing figure on the spoken word scene, Birtill’s poetry is rooted in working-class experience, social observation and a deep understanding of people and place.
Blissful Oblivion: Poems 2022–2026 brings together a powerful new collection of poems that reflect on love, loss, politics, memory and survival in changing times. Written with intelligence, humanity and a wonderfully dark comic touch, these poems remind us why Paul Birtill remains such an important and enduring voice in contemporary poetry.
‘Makes me laugh and feel depressed at the same time and that’s a rare gift.’
— John Cooper Clarke
