Writing on the Wall would like to pay heartfelt tribute to esteemed historian Dr. Ray Costello, whose funeral takes place today.
Dr. Ray Costello’s work was groundbreaking and essential and made a huge contribution, to our understanding of Liverpool Black History and the History of the British empire. His deep knowledge and unique storytelling helped illuminate crucial, often overlooked chapters in British history. He was a tireless advocate for the truth, and his commitment to setting the historical record straight remains an inspiration to all who value justice, inclusion, and the power of history told through perspectives that are too often ignored.
It was a privilege for WoW to collaborate with Ray during our Great War to Race Riots project, where he generously shared his extraordinary knowledge of Black seafarers and servicemen with our dedicated team of community volunteers. It was a real honour for us that this work was featured in the exhibition at the Museum of Liverpool, which celebrated Ray’s pioneering book, Black Salt: Seafarers of African Descent on British Ships.
Ray was also a much-loved and respected guest at WoWFEST over the years. One particularly memorable event, ‘The Real History Boys’, saw him in conversation with Mike Boyle and John Belham—an evening that brought historical truths to life with passion, insight, and warmth.
He will be sorely missed, but his legacy will endure.
