National Museums Liverpool presented Writing on the Wall with a very special commission: cataloging and working creatively with the archive of Dorothy Kuya (1933-2013), a Liverpool-born Black woman who dedicated her life to anti-racist, anti-sexist and anti-imperial causes.
Since October our archive project team have been working alongside a group of participants and uncovering vital histories that mirror much of what is happening in the UK in the present day.
We present to you the Dorothy Kuya Archive Blog! A monthly update on the Dorothy Kuya Archive Project as well as a chance to hear from those involved in this important work. You will hear from people who knew and worked with Dorothy in the past, as well as our participants, who in the present day are moved and inspired by the work that she did.
In our first post, you’ll hear from our archive team, Project Manager Janaya Pickett, Archivist Vicki Caren and Archive Assistant Dateus Tagoe – on what this work means to them and what they hope to achieve through the Dorothy Kuya Archive Project.
In this months post, you will hear about Dorothy’s life long campaigning for Women’s rights and how to attend our special International Women’s Day event, ‘Celebrating Dorothy.’
This month archivist Vicki Caren writes about Dorothy’s time as a member of the National Committee on Racism in Children’s Books (NCRCB) and how Dorothy’s work is still pertinent today for representation in children’s literature.
Archive Assistant Dateus Tagoe takes us through the Dorothy Kuya Archive workshops this month as he discusses his personal experience working on Dorothy’s archive. He also walks us through Dorothy’s time on the Granby Residents Association.
WoWFEST: Class of ’23 was an incredible month of events and shows discussing and exploring the complexities and diversity of working class culture. Of course, we had to include Dorothy Kuya and showcase her activism for her community and beyond in that discussion! What better place than Granby for a walking tour and archive handling session. Learn all about what happened in this months post by project manager Janaya Pickett and archivist Vicki Caren.
The Dorothy Kuya Archive Project has officially drawn to a close as we handed over the Archive to National Museum’s Liverpool. In this final blog post, Project Manager Janaya Pickett has gathered together all of the things she’s learned about Dorothy during the archive project.
