Founded in 2000 in the wake of the Liverpool Dockers’ Strike, Writing on the Wall (WoW) has spent 25 years championing writing as a force for resistance, dialogue, and change. We bring people together through the power of storytelling, ensuring that every voice—especially those too often unheard—is amplified and celebrated.

WoW promotes change whilst highlighting and tackling social and economic injustice. We aim to inspire personal and social transformation through writing and creativity. With a focus on writing which empowers we work with communities to gain strength through creativity.Madeline Heneghan & Mike Morris – WoW Co-Directors

Our Impact

  • 100+ projects, thousands of participants – From the What’s Your Story? projects in The Gambia to the L8 Archive Project conducted in our own neighbourhood and preserving the rich history of our Liverpool community, our work is rooted in culture, creativity, and collective storytelling.
  • 500+ new authors published – We’ve nurtured and showcased emerging talent, publishing over 90 anthologies. In 2018, we had the honour of publishing Bess, the first novel by a Liverpool-born Black woman. More recently, our Silent Victims series shed light on untold stories from the Thalidomide scandal.
  • Expanding festivals – What started as a three-day event in 2000 has grown into two annual, month-long festivals: WoWFEST in May and Black History Month in October, drawing bigger audiences and more powerful voices each year.
