What’s Your Walton Story?

“What’s Your Walton Story?” was a 12-week creative writing course at Spellow Library organised by Writing on the Wall for residents of Walton, Liverpool. The course provided a space for participants to connect with their community, share personal stories, and develop their writing skills under the guidance of professional writers. Their final pieces were published in a beautiful anthology called Walton Rising which was launched at the ‘From Spellow to Southport…with Love’ event during the 25th anniversary festival of WoWFEST.

After the racist riots in the summer of 2024 which attempted to divide people in the area, the Walton community pulled together to show the world it stands united. To mark the reopening of Spellow Library after it was set on fire during the riots, we wanted to celebrate the rich culture and history of Walton.

The course featured guidance from local professional writers Lyn Papadopoulos, Helen Jeffery, Joseph Roberts, Claire Beerjeraz, PJ Smith, Amina Atiq and Blue Saint.

Statement from Writing on the Wall on the violent UK riots

Writing on the Wall stands in solidarity with all communities affected by the racist riots occurring across the country. WoW has a proud history of anti-racism and supporting communities throughout the Liverpool City Region, and we are deeply shocked and horrified by the recent events.

For years, populist politicians and the national media have vilified immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and Muslims, promoting racism and Islamophobia which have led to attacks on people of colour. The right-wing claims to protect communities and children, yet their true colours are revealed when they attack community spaces such as Spellow Library – places of safety, knowledge, learning, and opportunity.

The working class has a proud history of opposing racism and fascism. We must unite and mobilise nationally to demonstrate that the majority of people of this country stand firmly against racism. We aspire to live in a country where no one fears attack or discrimination due to the colour of their skin or religion.

The tragic events in Southport should not be exploited to incite hate and racism. Our hearts and thoughts remain with the grieving families in our region.
