Spoken Word Power Celebration!

Last week we had our Spoken Word Power Celebration Event at Unity Theatre. We were delighted to have students performing their work from St Nic’s Academy, Mab Lane Primary School, Presfield High and The Salesian Academy of St John Bosco. The day was a culmination of the project which we have run in partnership with Eastside London for the past 3 years.

Over the past few months around 190 students from 6 local schools have participated in a series of workshops with artists Jess Green, Blue Saint, Claire Beerjeraz and Leonisha Barley where they have created and edited their own poems based around the theme ‘Hear my Voice.’ Following this, each school ran its own Poetry Slam event with the winners invited to perform at the celebration event.

Hosted by performance poet, Tom Stocks (The Chubby Northerner) and with performances from Jess, Blue, Claire and Leonisha, the event saw 34 young people from across 4 of the schools share their work with an audience of invited guests, parents, carers & staff.

We have been absolutely blown away by the talent of the young people and the impact this project has had on the confidence of the students.

Over the last 3 years, we have proudly collaborated with 17 schools and over 500 young people from across the Liverpool City Region, offering fun and accessible workshops, boosting literacy skills and confidence. We look forward to delivering future projects with young people and hope to partner with Eastside London in the future.

All the work performed at the event will also be published in an anthology later this year which will celebrate and recognise the wonderful poems created by the students throughout the project.
